Why Is My AC Not Cooling? 9 Common Causes and Fixes

AC running but blowing warm air? These are the 9 most common reasons an AC stops cooling — with simple fixes you can try and the ones that need a technician.
Short answer: An AC that runs but does not cool is most often caused by a dirty air filter, low refrigerant (a gas leak), a dirty condenser coil, a faulty capacitor, or incorrect thermostat settings. Some of these you can fix yourself in minutes; others need a technician.
Here are the 9 most common reasons your AC is not cooling properly in the Islamabad–Rawalpindi climate — and exactly what to do about each.
9 Reasons Your AC Is Not Cooling
1. Dirty or clogged air filter
A blocked filter chokes airflow and freezes the coil. Fix: Clean or replace the filter every 2–4 weeks during summer. This is the single most common cause and costs nothing.
2. Low refrigerant / gas leak
If the AC blows warm air or ice forms on the pipes, refrigerant is low. Fix: This needs a technician to find the leak, repair it, and recharge — not just a top-up.
3. Dirty condenser (outdoor) coil
Dust, leaves and pollen block heat release from the outdoor unit. Fix: Gently wash the outdoor coil; in our dusty climate this is needed at least twice a season.
4. Faulty capacitor
If the outdoor fan or compressor hums but won't start, the capacitor may be dead. Fix: A technician replaces the capacitor — a quick, inexpensive repair.
5. Wrong thermostat settings
Set to 'fan' instead of 'cool', or temperature set too high. Fix: Set mode to Cool and target 24–26°C for efficient cooling.
6. Frozen evaporator coil
Caused by low airflow or low gas. Fix: Turn the AC off, let the ice melt fully, then address the airflow/gas cause.
7. Blocked or leaking ducts (ducted systems)
Cooled air escapes before reaching the room. Fix: Have ducts inspected, sealed and cleaned.
8. Undersized AC for the room
A 1-ton unit cannot cool a large hall. Fix: Match capacity to room size (roughly 1 ton per 120–160 sq ft in our climate).
9. Failing compressor
The 'heart' of the AC. If it's failing, cooling drops and bills rise. Fix: Requires professional diagnosis; sometimes repair, sometimes replacement.
Quick DIY Checklist Before You Call
- Clean or replace the air filter.
- Confirm the thermostat is on 'Cool' at 24–26°C.
- Check the outdoor unit is running and not blocked.
- Make sure no breaker has tripped.
- Listen for unusual hissing, buzzing or rattling.
If cooling doesn't return after these steps, the issue is internal (gas, capacitor or compressor) and needs a technician.
